Somaliland Disability Ambassadors Fellowship (DAF Fellowship)

Somaliland Disability Ambassadors Fellowship (DAF Fellowship) is a new concept in Somaliland, pioneered by the Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs & Family for the Youth of Somaliland who are willing and able to work within their community. They will influence the social endeavors to advocate for self-help and healthy choices through conversations, public presentations at workshops or conferences, and attendance at community and social events. The fellows of this program will promote accessibility, inclusivity, and empowerment of people with disability (PWDs). The group promotes disability as a valued aspect of diversity through public awareness and outreach efforts.

Moreover, the fellows will promote the rights of persons with disability by advocating the enactment and implementation of the newly drafted national disability rights act, as well as the approved disability policy. Finally, this fellowship program is a part of the Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs and Family (MESAF) initiative towards the advancement of disability rights and increasing inclusive social services both at national and sub-national levels.

Objectives:

The primary objective of this programme is to promote disability rights by educating, and influencing local communities across Somaliland regions to create enabling environment for people with disabilities.
WHY GET INVOLVED

Disability Ambassadors Fellow will develop public speaking, presentation, communication, networking, and leadership skills. Ambassadors develop knowledge and experiences which will be beneficial for personal growth and their journey while they are volunteering with the Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs & Family in their respective regions. Ambassadors will participate in monthly leadership and training opportunities, which will be hosted on topics such as Social Problems of People with Disabilities, The Prophet Mohamed's (SCW) Care for People with Special Needs, the National Disability Policy and Act, and Confronting discrimination and environmental imposed challenges in Somaliland. Ambassadors will also create and lead accessibility-focused programming each month which aims to educate the Somaliland community on topics such as disability and accessibility.

PASS IT ON (PIO)

After each month, all fellows shall be required to host a Pass-it-On activity at the end of the month. Through this exercise, each participant is expected to share their knowledge and skills with at least thirty youth in their locality with the participation of a senior government member, a religious leader, a traditional leader, and other senior members of the community. The fellows will also expose government and private sector buildings that are lacking accessibility mechanisms.

Period of the Fellowship Programme

6 months (Six Months) – starting from the date fellows start their assignment.

Skills and Qualifications

Who is eligible for the program?

  1. Somaliland Citizen who is resident in Hargeisa, Borama, Buroa, Berbera, Erigavo and Lasanod

  2. Somaliland National ID is required

  3. University Graduate

  4. Good interpersonal communication

  5. Passionate about disability rights issues

  6. Basic knowledge of community volunteering

  7. Good communication skills both verbal and written

  8. Ability to use computer software and mobile applications

  9. Female applicants are highly encouraged
