Health Officer
Background of Shaqodoon Organization
Shaqodoon is a local NGO founded in 2011 to create innovative and long-lasting solutions to Somalia/land’s youth employment challenges. The organization designs, delivers and evaluates innovative programs to address some of the local community’s most urgent challenges in livelihood skill training, education, civic education, justice and health. Shaqodoon is a national platform whose goal is to prioritize youth employment and education on the development agenda and to exchange knowledge on effective policies and programs to improve employment and education opportunities for youth, prioritizing at risk youth, marginalized groups, and people who have lost hope and are thus often jailed for local crimes.
Gabiley Youth Center (GYC) was established in the mid of 2018 and officially launched last quarter 2019, this center UNFPA financed and supported the center through MoYS and first quarter 2022 Shaqodoon handover from MOYS to manage the center, Gabiley Youth Center is aimed to be one of the physical spaces that provides essential and strategic approach in promoting, empowering, mobilizing, educating, and fostering youth participation and engagement t in Gabiley region., where a considerable number of vulnerable youths are found. The center is intended to function as multiservice offering hub. However, based upon the resources available, the skills and capacity building services has now been initiated as the first programs offered to youth, women as well as the community.
Capacity building and skills trainings that is being started by the center has the ambition to play an important part in the development of the youth. The trainings have a specific thematic focus on social inclusion, promoting opportunities and providing space to youth.
Job purpose
The health officer reports to the center manager and will ensure that reach and outreach activities are undertaken.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain good working relationships with local community
Mobilize community members to seek services at the center
Organizing outreach and in reach campaign awareness
Organizing and planning health trainings at the center.
Assist in identifying members of the community that are facing SRH Issues
Assist in mobilizing community members to identify and address SRH related risks in Gebiley.
Receive, label and analyze samples (blood, stool, tissue etc.).
Matching patient information and Entering data into computers
Document all activities, results and report back to management.
Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and etc.
Maintain equipment and assist in ordering laboratory supplies.
Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderly environment.
Comply with the correct procedures, policies, and health and safety regulations.
Maintain all laboratory records.
Prepare samples for testing using various types of laboratory equipment.
Assist in developing and disseminating awareness materials that are targeted towards young adults and women.
Implement risk mitigation and awareness activities
Work to carry out SRH Services and GBV mainstreaming activities
Mobilize Community and facilitate community dialogue on SRH and GBV
Prepare monthly and quarterly reports as required by the Center Manager
Implementation of community mobilization activities to specifically access “hard to reach” and vulnerable beneficiaries.
Organize educational and promotional activities to raise awareness on SRH topics/services, including:
Family Planning
Mother and Neonatal health, Antenatal Care, and Postnatal Care,
Awareness of STIs and infection prevention
Referral and guidance for survivors of sexual assault.
Contribute to the development of a variety of health education material and tools to fit the context.
Mobilize the community, women and girls, women’s groups, community groups etc. to increase SRH awareness and service utilization, together with SRH and GBV teams.
Liaise with midwives and community health workers to track and monitor women/clients targeted by the program.
Ensure the safe and confidential referral of identified survivors of sexual assault to GBV services.
Organize meetings with community representatives, and target groups as needed.
Engage community leaders and women’s groups in raising awareness on Sexual Reproductive Health.
Participate in the recruitment of community health workers.
Support the training of community health workers (CHWs) on SRH topics/service promotion, hygiene promotion, waste management, infection prevention etc.
Skills and Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in laboratory Clinic, Nursing and public health, with minimum of 2 years’ experience
Skills and Experience: Three or more years of related experience for clinics, strong community engagement and awareness skills, strong documentation and communication skills, work successfully with people from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds and lifestyles, experience with data and evaluation, treat a variety of people with respect and compassion and Basic computer skills.
Language
Fluency in oral and written English and Somali
