Laboratory Technician (Mogadishu)


BACKGROUND

The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Central Somalia (Mudug and Galgadud regions) and Mogadishu implementing interventions in the areas of livelihood, WASH and health reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought affected people.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the Health facility Medical Officer the Laboratory technician Perform the necessary testing and investigations requested by the health providers at the IRC supported clinics and contribute to quality improvement of the service delivery.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Program management:


Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, using microscope to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into laboratory registers.
Performing tests to look for microorganisms, parasites or bacteria in body fluids and blood.
Analyze the results of tests and experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical and electrical devices, e.g. hemocue machines and microscopes.
Analyze and record test data to issue reports that use charts, graphs and narratives.
Conduct blood tests for transfusion purposes and perform blood counts.
Making specimens or samples to examine the count of cells in blood and abnormal cells in blood or body fluids.
Maintaining the laboratory equipment and ensuring that the laboratory is well stocked with all the necessary instruments; set up, adjust, maintain and clean laboratory equipment.
Collect blood or tissue samples from patients while all the time observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples.
Consult with the medical/clinical officer in charge to determine the final diagnosis when abnormal cells/tissue/test results are found.
Instruct and guide other laboratory technicians and medical personnel on required techniques when collecting samples.
Interpreting results and submitting the initial test results to the superior for further analysis.
Ensuring that he/she stays up to date on the latest technical developments in medical science.
Ensure proper storage of all items as their specific storage requirements.
Ensure timely issuance of order to ensure constant supply of laboratory reagents to the primary health care facilities
Advice on relevant laboratory related issues when called upon to do so.


Human Resource:


Participate in continuing education for staff.
Ensure continuous mentoring and capacity building of staff, to ensure proper understanding and adherence to laboratory guidelines.


Reporting and Coordination:


Prepare and submit regular laboratory inventory reports and requisition orders in time to avoid unnecessary delays in the purchases and delivery of same items.
Monitoring laboratory reagent consumption rates and making sure accurate records of the same are well kept.
Ensure full confidentiality of patients results as per the national guidelines.
Ensure all laboratory reports are done on time, analyzed and sent to the medical/clinical officer in charge and the Senior Medical Officer.
Notify the medical/clinical officer and Senior Medical Officer on all investigations above the positive threshold.
Coordinate laboratory activities as per the standards ensuring requests, reporting and interpretation of results are done in the right way.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Diploma in Laboratory Technology, preferably with Technical knowledge in laboratory management systems and quality assurance/standard operating procedures.
Registered by the relevant and credible body and in possession of current practicing license in Somalia
Minimum three (3) years working experience in a Hospital/health facility set-up.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES


Good laboratory knowledge and skills.
Ability to write clear, concise reports and well developed communication skills.
Excellent organizational, communication, inter-personal, writing, and communication skills.
Good computer skills (Complete MS Office package and any database management and analysis).
Must be a team player, flexible and culturally sensitive.
Ready to work in difficult environmental conditions with displaced communities.
