Project Associate Officer

Our client is a division of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). Our client is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly (RES/68/72) to ensure an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problem posed by a wide range of explosive hazards. Legislative mandates also recognize our clients technical expertise in responding to threats posed by unsecured and unsafe conventional weapons and ammunition stockpiles. As an office within DPKO, our client supports peacekeeping and special political missions in accordance with Security Council mandates.

Our client as a component of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) provides explosive hazard management capacities, including mitigation, to AMISOM as part of a logistical support package. Non-lethal tactical advice and analysis is delivered by our clients technical advisors located in each AMISOM Sector Headquarters and at AMISOM Force Headquarters, who support AMISOM planning and operations. Our client support includes both enabling ("operate in spite of IEDs") and response ("defeat the device"). As a component of the UN Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) our client also supports the Federal Government of Somalia, including the Somali Police Force, Somali Explosive Management Authority and National Security Advisor.


Role objective:

Under the general direction of the Project Manager the job holder will conduct the following tasks:

· Provide assistance to the Management, including open-source research, assistance with the organization of management coordination events, travel, and administration and security clearance;

· Provide assistance to the Project as directed by management;

· Compile and oversee the maintenance key client Somalia products, edit weekly, monthly and donor reports in line with activity and events;

· Draft and edit talking points for senior staff;

· Draft correspondence on behalf of the management;

· Follow up on project action points to ensure deadlines are met;

· Assist in organizing donor and media presentations;

· Maintain documentation of decisions and action taken on project issues and ensure project work plans and smart sheets are kept updated;

ï‚· Organize management schedule, coordinate and backstop management in all administration and other related matters;

· Provide clear documents and bring matters that need decision by the management to his/her attention;

· Coordinate papers and take meeting minutes in support of the Department;

· Assist the management with special assignments;

· Produce minutes and summarize meetings;

· Set up spreadsheets, database files, and tables ensuring appropriate presentation and style of accuracy of information;

· Provide general administrative assistance while managing the day to day running of the office to ensure smooth, effective and efficient operation; Support to Internal Programme Communications:

ï‚· Initiate and minute, on Skype or other tele- or video- conference means, internal project management coordination calls and meetings and draft and circulate minutes.



Master's degree in In Business Administration, Project Management, Social Sciences or related fields and/or Bachelor's degree in in a related field with an additional 2 years (total 4 years) of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work experience:

§ Minimum of 2 years of demonstrable relevant Project Management experience and/or minimum of 1 years of demonstrable relevant Mine Action experience.

Geographical experience:

Minimum of 1 years of experience in Africa with local experience in Mogadishu is an advantage.


Fluency in English (essential) and Somali (desirable).

Other relevant information:

Experience within the UN system is desired;
A minimum one years` experience working in international organizations required;
A general understanding of Mine Action is required for this post (either military or humanitarian knowledge base);
A proven record in administrative duties and organizational expertise is essential;
Computer literacy, with solid experience of using Microsoft Office suite required;
Proven ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines;
Proven ability to work within a team.
